Coal is often spoken of as one product, but the industry uses two main types for very different jobs. Knowing the difference helps buyers choose the right coal and avoid costly mistakes.

Coking coal, also called metallurgical coal, is heated in the absence of air to make coke. Coke is a hard, porous fuel that is used in blast furnaces to make iron and steel. Coking coal needs specific properties and generally low ash content to make good coke.

Non-coking coal, often called thermal coal, does not form coke. It is burned directly to produce heat and is the type used by most industries that need fuel.

Coking coal is used mainly in steel making. Non-coking coal is used in power generation, cement plants, brick kilns, boilers and many other industrial furnaces.

For non-coking coal, check the calorific value, ash content and moisture, and match them to your equipment. Ask your supplier for a recent test report before placing a large order.
