How to Store Steel at Your Site to Prevent Rust and Damage

Buying good steel is only half the job. If it is stored badly, rust, bending and mix-ups can waste money and weaken the final structure. Here is how to store steel properly at your site.

Keep steel off the ground

Never leave bars or sections directly on soil or wet surfaces. Place them on wooden sleepers or a raised platform, so air can move underneath and water cannot collect around the steel.

Protect it from rain

Cover the stack with a tarpaulin, but leave the sides open for airflow. Fully sealed covers trap moisture and can cause more rust than they prevent, especially in humid weather.

Stack by size and grade

Keep different sizes and grades in separate, labelled stacks. This prevents mix-ups on site and makes it easier to check what is left before ordering more. Stack bars straight and evenly to avoid bending.

Keep it away from chemicals and salt

Do not store steel near acids, cement bags that may leak, or salty water. These speed up corrosion and can leave stains that are hard to remove.

Use the oldest stock first

Use steel in the order it arrived. A little surface rust is normal and usually harmless, but heavy flaking rust or pitting should be checked by your engineer before the steel is used.
